It’s that time of year again! The time when music fans go to their collective corners and come out swinging. It’s when friends fight against friends, sons vs. fathers, teacher vs. student. That’s right! It’s the annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee list! That time of the year when people of my generation turn to each other and ask, “Who?” Let’s discuss this crowded field of honorees. Some known, some obscure — but ALL talented.
DISCLAMER: Starting with this year, I will no longer complain about an inductee NOT being rock and roll enough for the Hall. The title on the building means nothing anymore. These are not rock and roll hall of famers. They are MUSIC hall of famers.
2026 INDUCTEES
Phil Collins
CATEGORY: PERFORMER
He is the man who stepped out from behind the drum kit to lead the band Genesis into a new (and profitable) direction. Phil is already a member of the Hall via Genesis (2010). But in 2026, he is inducted as a solo artist. He was THE voice of 80’s pop music. The only artist with more #1 hits during the ‘80s was Michael Jackson. Much more than a drummer, Phil had his finger on the pulse of popular music during his time and he delivered! He joined Genesis in 1970 and took over the lead singing duties when Peter Gabriel left. But it was his solo work that defines his greatness. His unique voice could be heard everywhere. He was a composer, player, vocalist, actor, producer, go-to duet partner. Phil is experiencing health issues right now so his induction couldn’t come fast enough.
FUN FACT: Phil Collins was the only artist to play at BOTH Live Aid concerts in London and Philadelphia on the same day. He flew on the Concorde Jet to make the trip
Iron Maiden
CATEGORY: PERFORMER
The third time was the charm for Britain’s Iron Maiden. After being nominated in 2021 and 2023, the heavy metal heroes were finally voted into the Rock Hall in 2026. It should have NEVER taken 3 times! The year was 1980 and, unbeknownst to the general public, heavy metal music was about to explode! EMI had signed Maiden the year before and placed them on a compilation album called Metal for Muthas. Later that year, their self-titled debut hit the stores. It was a great start and provided a lot of exposure. The band secured opening spots for major tours and festivals. Success started slowly but finally spread to the US with their 2nd album, “Killers’. The lead singer, Paul Di’Anno, did not handle the early success very well and a change was made. Bruce Dickinson joined and immediately went on tour with the band. The year was 1982, the third album ,The Number of the Beast., was released and THIS is why Iron Maiden will be accepting a HOF induction this year! The album blew up. Heavy Metal was real and getting bigger. Iron Maiden wrote the book on how to play and act like a heavy metal machine. Their relentless touring and album production captivated rock fans as more and more joined the party A well deserved induction! There is a good argument that none of this success happens without the presence of their mascot., Eddie The Head”.
Oasis

The feuding Gallagher brothers set the 90’s on fire with their rock/Britpop music through their band Oasis. Formed in 1991, the band hit the big time in early 1994 with their debut album, Definitely, Maybe. The following year, they released their monster album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? and Oasis became a worldwide success. The band’s success was built around their anthemic sound. Oasis brought back the cool swagger and big sound. Fans ate it up as the band eventually sold over a hundred million records. The attention brought internal problems with the Gallagher brothers, resulting in public altercations. The British tabloids LOVED them for it! Through breakups and lineup changes, Oasis continued to release relatable hit after hit, delighting their international fanbase and inspiring a whole stable of artists.
Luther Vandross

The late great soul and R&B singer Luther Vandross gets his cubicle at the RnR HOF in 2026. Luther’s popularity is never questioned as he achieved tremendous success in his career. The statistics are undeniable: Eleven consecutive RIAA-certified platinum albums, 25 million records sold. If there is a Hall of Fame, Vandross needs to be in it. He started out in a local musical ensemble in New York City. He was just a high schooler but his natural tenor voice stood out. He began to get work as a back up singer for several artists including Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Carly Simon, Cat Stevens, Ringo Starr and more. Vandross formed a group in 1975, called Luther, which had minor success. But in 1977, Luther went solo with his first album on Epic Records, Never Too Much, and rest is history. What makes Luther stand out is his undeniably beautiful voice and style. Some people believe that Luther’s interpretation of love songs sparked a jump in the world’s population. His tenor voice and subtle style was smooth as silk. Throughout the 80’s, Luther’s songs were listed on all the charts. He produced others also, lending his well-trained ear. Luther Vandross was another extreme talent that was lost too soon. He was only 54 when he passed in 2005

Celia Cruz
CATEGORY: EARLY INFLUENCE
Celia Cruz, was born in Cuba in 1925. By the time she was a teenager, she was already a local celebrity due to her amazing voice. She won contests and got the attention of popular groups. Sonora Matancera was one of these groups. Celia grew to fame while in this group for over 15 years. Celia was touring with them in Mexico (June 1960) when everything at home changed. The Cuban Revolution, headed by Fidel Castro, toppled the Cuban dictatorship. While she returned to Cuba briefly, Celia knew that her time there was limited. She was known to speak out against Castro and his regime. She was seeing people, who did the same, disappear. Celia left her native country for good, becoming a prominent Cuban in exile. International fame was next and a long productive career (37 albums worth) turned Celia into “The Queen of Salsa”. Awards abounded for Celia and even an acting career. In 1990 Celia finally returned to Cuba to make a presentation at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. Upon leaving she grabbed a handful of Cuban soil and put it in a bag. This bag was later placed in her coffin. Celia Cruz was honored with National Endowment for the Arts award, presented by President Bill Clinton in 1994. She continued to record, perform and act until her death, at the age of 77, in 2003
Queen Latifah
CATEGORY: EARLY INFLUENCE
The multi-talented Queen Latifah burst on the hip hop scene in it’s early days. Her ground-breaking musical career was only outshone by her success in film and TV. However, the RRHOF doesn’t care about the movies, they care about the musical impact. Well, The Queen was destined to make a difference from the moment she chose her name. Born Dana Elaine Owens, in 1970, she built her stage name around the Arabic name ‘Latifah’, which means delicate and very kind. She added the Queen to represent the strong black women she knew and wanted to be. Queen Latifah began beat-boxing for the hip hop group, Ladies Fresh, whose producer, DJ King Gemini, recorded Latifah singing “Wrath of My Madness”. He passed the song onto Fab Five Freddie, the host of ‘Yo! MTV Raps’. The rest is history . She was only 20 yrs old. She wasn’t the first female rap star but she became the first female rap SUPERstar. She sang about important issues black women of all ages face. Her songs shed light on issues like domestic violence, street harassments and bad relationships. The albums and awards flowed in as the Queen grew up in front of the world. In 2023, she decided to switch styles and sing soul music and jazz standards. When the history of hip hop is written, Queen Latifah will be seen as a pioneer for women. Her contribution to American film is another big chapter.
Gram Parsons
CATEGORY: EARLY INFLUENCE
He wasn’t on the scene very long. He died way too soon, at age 26. During the few years that he professionally played music, he planted a sonic seed that grew into a tremendous industry. Gram Parsons was a pioneer of country rock and something he called “cosmic country”. It grew out of his love of the country music genre from an early age. However, it was seeing Elvis in person in 1956 that really ignited a musical spark within him. As he grew into a young man, he picked up on the folk music craze and formed a group called International Submarine Band in 1966. His musical career had started! The Submarine Band appeared in a Peter Fonda movie but didn’t last much longer. The talented Gram was restless and accepted an offer to audition for The Byrds. He became a hired-hand for the band and appeared on the album “Sweetheart of the Rodeo.” Released in 1968. Gram’s influence on this album is unmistakable as he changed the musical direction originally intended by Roger McGwin. The album combined traditional country music and rock. Put a big PIN into this album and this moment in music history! This album set the stage for the 70’s popular singer-songwriter, country rock era.
During the Byrd’s tour of England, they met up with The Rolling Stones. Gram and Keith Richards became fast friends. The band was considering a tour in South Africa, Parsons refused to go for political reasons. He stayed in England with his new friend, Keith. Parsons passion for country music rubbed off on Keith and, eventually, found it’s way into the Rolling Stones arsenal. Ever hear “Wild Horses”? (Parsons covered this song with the Flying Burrito Brothers). Parsons was ready to unleash his ‘cosmic country’ when he returned to the states in 1969. He formed The Flying Burrito Brothers with Hillman from the Byrds and their debut album received good reviews but not sales. At this point in his life, the 24 year old’s drug use was becoming an issue. His last few years must have been a blur but he was still making music as a solo artist. He met and employed a young singer/guitarist, Emmy Lou Harris, and toured across the country (with Elvis’s TCB Band!). The tour lost money but launched Harris’ career. 1974 brought Parson’s last album, released after his tragic overdose. The album displayed a new commitment from Parsons as he limited his drug and alcohol use during it’s recording. The Gram Parsons appreciation train took a minute to get going but as time went on, his influence was felt more and more. Parson death did not end his story. Billy Idol

Billy Idol has been doing it for a long time. He, like so many others, started in the music business at a young age. In fact, he has lasted long enough for the genre of music he started in is now having a comeback. A young Billy Idol (William Michael Albert Broad) was smitten with punk-rock pioneers, Sex Pistols. Excited by this new aggressive form of rock, Billy became the guitarist in a punk rock band called Chelsea for a short time, then formed Generation X. The band was a commercial success in the UK. Releasing three albums before breaking up. With some success under his belt, Idol moved to New York City to pursue a solo career.
Through his manager, Bill Aucoin, Idol was introduced to Steve Stevens. A hot New York guitarist/multi-instrumental. This is when Billy Idol, the superstar, was born. The collaboration with Stevens paid off immediately as the Idol’s first release, an EP called ‘Don’t Stop” (1981), contained the hit ‘Dancing With Myself” . Steve Stevens was responsible for Idol’s sound as much as Billy was and because of that he has been inducted alongside Idol into the hall! Followed by the debut solo album, ‘Billy Idol’ (1982), which was a modest commercial success. It was his next record in 1983, Rebel Yell, that launched Mr. Idol. This success allowed him to be a regular on the then-new television channel MTV. Never EVER have musicians enjoyed the exposure that MTV brought. Idol, looking the part, never missed with his follow up records. For the next decade, Idol continued to be a successful rock star as well as try his hand at acting. Billy, like most HOF inductees, brought something different to the music scene. His blend of punk attitude and pop melodies with dance beats was the perfect fit for the times. If punk was too ‘dirty’, you had Idol there to handsomely sneer, and make you dance.
Joy Division/New Order

Like Billy Idol, Joy Division was inspired by punk pioneers, The Sex Pistols. Many snot-nosed kids picked up and abused instruments following The Sex Pistols example. However Joy Division has risen above all because they added a new twist to the punk landscape. Joy Division is considered the pioneers of alternative dance music. Alternative dance mixes the “melodic song structure of alternative and indie rock with electronic beats, synths and/or samples, and club orientation of post-disco dance music . When their lead singer committed suicide, the band changed names to New Order but continued their musical journey. During a trip to New York, they were introduced to post-disco, freestyle, and electro. The band’s heyday was in the 80’s. Their first big hit, ‘Blue Monday’, came in ‘83. This is the best selling 12” UK single of ALL TIME. A club favorite and a hint as to the future explosion of techno-pop. New Order is still making them dance live to this day!
Sade
CATEGORY: PERFORMER
Sade is a person and a band. The band was named after the lead singer. Sade Adu and her bandmates formed in 1982 in London. Sade, the band, is HOF worthy because they perfected a new style. Like fellow inductee, Joy Division, they took an established sound and tweaked it into something new. The new genre was called sophisti-pop. Defined as a pop music subgenre that came out of the British new wave era. Bands took hints from jazz, soul and pop and infused a bigger sounding production. It was smooth and used the newest technology to build a jazzy atmosphere. The bands, like Sade, looked the part also. They dressed up nice, were well groomed and Sade Adu is absolutely gorgeous with a haunting voice to match. The band has a 40 year history despite some big gaps. They always put out fantastic music. Sade’s voice is immediately recognizable and the lyrical content she sang about was empowering. The band won a Grammy for “Best New Artist” in 1982 and their debut album sold 10 million copies. Songs like “Smooth Operator” and “The Sweetest Taboo” sounded sophisticated. Sade created a world all their own. You can’t help but feel cool when listening to it.
Wu-Tang-Clan
CATEGORY: PERFORMER
The year was 1993 and hip hop was king. Wu-Tang Clan is a hip-hop group collectively and separately at the same time. They perfected the TEAM approach to marketing by keeping their group vital and promoting individuals within the group solo work. This was one of the reasons for their Hall of Fame induction. Again they were pioneers. The group’s appeal was so strong that the record company was forced to allow individual members to negotiate solo contracts outside the company.
That debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), 1993, was revolutionary. The unlikely marriage of hip hop, comic books and Japanese Kung Fu movie traditions meshed in an unexpected way. Quite simply, they are credited with revitalizing East Coast hip hop. They are also regarded as the greatest hip hop group of all time. Why? Because they WERE a group of individuals. Each group song had up to eight different voices exchanging verses. Each with their own style and attitude. Wu Tang created a world that immersed their fans in Japanese lore, comic books and 1990 NY street-life. If that wasn’t enough, fans could follow their favorite Wu-Tanger’s solo work. Each MC (nine total) was a distinctly talented lyricist. The success of the solo records only boosted the group as a whole. A clothing line followed in 1995, a video game in 1999. The Wu-Tang Clan are ONE of ONE. Many have tried but no one has pulled off the complete dominance of a genre like Wu-Tang. Even if they may have created the genre.
Fela Kuti
CATEGORY: MUSICAL INFLUENCE
Born in 1938 to a prominent Nigerian family, Fela’s future looked bright. He was an intelligent boy with a talent for music. He started his adulthood studying to be a doctor in London. While there, he ignited his passion for music and formed a jazz band where he incorporated African elements into the music, it was 1961. When he returned to Nigeria, he continued exploring his musical style, blending jazz, funk and High life into something new. He coined the style ‘Afrobeat”. The infectious rhythms and exciting performances drew a lot of attention. But it was the politically charged lyrics that set Fela apart. He often criticized the Nigerian government for it’s corruption and human rights violations. Fela Kuti was arrested many times, harassed even more. He was imprisoned also. He never stopped speaking out through his music and activism.
MC Lyte
CATEGORY: EARLY INFLUENCE AWARD
In the year 2026, it is hard to find a living musician who was the FIRST at something. When you find one, they must be in RRHOF! This is the case with rapper MC Lyte. Born Lana Michele Moorer in 1970, in Queens, NY and raised in East Flatbush, she was surrounded by East coast hip hop pioneers. Childhood friends, Milk Dee and DJ Giz (Audio Two) were brothers. Their father started a record label for them. A 16 yr old Lana, now MC Lyte, presented a song called “I Cram to Understand U (Sam)”. A song she wrote when she was 14. An early song about the crack era. Fast forward a year (1980) and MC Lyte along with that song (and Audio Two) were signed to Atlantic Records. The song launched her career and the album is recognized as a hip hop classic. What followed from then on for MC Lyte was nothing less than groundbreaking. Many ‘firsts’, including the first female Hip Hop artist to break the Billboard 200. Her music was socially conscience and spoke specifically to young women.
The rise of rap in America brought MC Lyte to national attention. Her realistic lyrics dealt with industry sexism, racism and the drug culture. She is credited for helping transition hip-hop from the “party-vibe’ of the late 1970s into a ‘socially conscious form of expression”. In 1990 she performed at Carnegie Hall. Over the years, MC Lyte has collaborated with many artists and become an ‘elder stateswoman’ in the industry. Of course, her talent is not limited to music. Her first acting role was in 1991. She has done films and TV. She does voiceover work as well. MC Lyte is a pioneer and is mentioned anytime the origins of hip hop are discussed. Welcome to the HALL!
Linda Creed

MUSICAL EXCELLENCE
Many babies were conceived to a Linda Creed song. I’m only guessing because there is no data to back up this claim. Just listen to the songs that Linda Creed wrote. These songs make the crazy statement sound reasonable. Just listen to “You Are Everything” and ”Betcha By Golly, Wow” by The Stylistics. Two big hits on air and on the dark dance floors all over the country in 1971. Creed was a passionate songwriter who helped establish the Philadelphia Soul Sound. Her smart lyrics fit perfectly with the lush style of the Philly Sound. Tragically, Creed was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1974, she was just 26. She lived 11 more short years and died in 1986, at the age of 37. A month after her death, one of her songs became a Number One hit when Whitney Houston styled “The Greatest Love of All” . A whole new generation was inspired by Linda Creed’s beautiful lyrics
Rick Rubin
CATEGORY: MUSICAL EXCELLENCE
If you ran into Rick Rubin on the street you might be inclined to give him some cash so he could get a hot meal. The barefoot, unkempt, grey-haired, scraggy-bearded man looks homeless. But he has a home, probably a very nice one. Rick has been an important music producer since 1983 when he met and befriended DJ Jazzy Jay. The two produced “It’s Yours” by rapper T La Rock. The record got a worldwide release and opened a few doors for Rick. Behind one of those doors was concert promoter/artist manager Russell Simmons . Simmons helped Rubin start Def Jam records and soon they were redefining hip hop. They had a stable of new, hot artists. Eventually they parted ways and Rubin has become a household name since
Rick Rubin was behind a few momentous rock history moments. He married rock with rap, creating a new lane on the Hip Hop highway. First he convinced a young punk band to give hip hop a try. That group, The Beastie Boys, had a historic career. Next he resurrected a once-great rock band by pairing them with a rising rap group. You may have seen the video of Run DMC sampling the song ‘Walk This Way” by Aerosmith only to be interrupted by Steven Tyler breaking through the brick wall. This marriage resurrected Aerosmith’s career and opened the door for much more rock/rap collaborations. Then came artist after artist into the Rubin stables. From legends like Paul McCartney to young start up groups like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Peppers have a 30 year relationship with Rubin. Under his direction, they honed their unique sound and broke new ground.
All in all the class of 2026 is quite deserving. As we get further and further away from the roots of rock and roll, we can expect the inductees to represent ALL genres of music. The questions we need to ask are:
Did these artists move the needle?
Did they inspire others?
Did they bring joy?
YES, YES and HELL YEAH!
